For millions of moviegoers, Frank the Pug was the wisecracking little alien with a suit, an attitude, and some of the funniest scenes in Men in Black. Behind the character was a real canine performer named Mushu.
Mushu was the dog performer; Frank the Pug was the fictional character. The two names belong together in the film story, but they are not interchangeable.
Men in Black
Mushu is associated with the original 1997 film Men in Black, where Frank appeared as a small dog with an unexpectedly large personality.
The contrast between a familiar Pug and a secret-agent alien gave the character an immediate comic charge without requiring the dog to be anything other than wonderfully expressive.
A Bigger Role in Men in Black II
Director Barry Sonnenfeld later discussed Mushu returning for Men in Black II and receiving a substantially larger role in the sequel. That behind-the-scenes connection helps explain why Frank became more than a quick visual joke.
The sequel gave the character more room to interact with the story, while Mushu remained part of the real-world canine performance behind the role.
How Frank Was Performed
American Humane production records describe trained canine performers being handled for physical action, positioning, and repeatable shots. The talking-mouth effect was created digitally rather than by asking a dog to speak.
Production records also identify multiple Pugs in Men in Black II, including Moo-Shoo or Mushu, Mizo, Liberty, and Chin Chin. That does not mean every dog performed every shot; productions often use multiple trained animals for different needs and safe, reliable coverage.
Why Frank Became So Memorable
Frank worked because the tiny Pug and the secret-agent persona were such a perfect mismatch. The comedy came from the contrast, the timing, and the expressive face at the center of it all.
Mushu helped make that contrast land: a real Pug performer gave a fictional alien a personality movie fans still remember.
