Why Pugs Have Those Famous Wrinkles
Those famous forehead folds were not simply overlooked by early breeders - they were prized.
A Face by Design
Pug wrinkles are one of the breed's most recognizable features. Historical breed accounts describe Chinese breeders deliberately selecting for prominent forehead wrinkles, making the folds an important part of the Pug's look.
That distinctive expression became part of the face people came to recognize and cherish - a little bit serious, a little bit surprised, and unmistakably Pug.
The Prince Connection
According to American Kennel Club breed-history accounts, Chinese breeders particularly prized forehead wrinkle patterns that resembled the character 王, associated in the AKC account with the word "prince."
That does not mean every Pug's wrinkles literally form the character. It is a historical description of a look breeders valued, not a rule that every modern Pug must display the same pattern.
A Pug Trademark That Survived Centuries
The preference for a prominent, expressive face helped make wrinkles part of the Pug's visual signature. They remain a recognized feature of the breed today, with the AKC standard describing the wrinkles as large and deep.
Centuries later, the result is still one of the most memorable faces in the dog world: a face that can look dignified, comic, curious, and ready for a nap all at once.
